| SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) |
Perhaps you've been hearing about this new hi-resolution music format invented by Sony and Philips. If you want to get more in depth information on the technicalities, follow the links below. But for now, here's what we think is significant to know:
The SACD, or Super Audio Compact Disc, is a shiny silver disc the same size as a CD or DVD. In fact, it is built on the foundation of the DVD format, in terms of the physical format. But it is a completely unique format in other respects. First of all, it's a music format, not a video format. Second, it encodes digital audio in a completely different fashion than the CD (or DVD) which is an interesting technical story, but for now let's just say it sounds really good. Also, it is capable of holding both a 2-channel and surround version of the music, both at hi-resolution, on the same disc.
One of the most appealing features of the SACD is that it can also include an additional layer that will play in a standard CD player. Of course that layer just plays at standard CD resolution, but it does mean that the same disc is playable in about a billion more players, which is a good thing!
We've been mastering SACDs for a couple of years now, including a bunch that include surround versions of the music. Call us to discuss how your music might benefit from beign released in this format.
