We are currently using a one inch ATR machine, and also two ATR 102s with quarter/half inch head configurations.

The one inch format was introduced about ten years ago in England by an audio designer/manufacturer named Tim deParavacini and his company Esoteric Audio Research. Of the titles we have worked on that were delivered in this format, the Grammy winning recording of "Meeting by the River" by Ry Cooder and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is an example of just how good music mixed to this format can sound.

The original one inch machines, of which De Paravacini made about ten, were based on a Studer C37 transport. Then several years ago Mike Spitz of ATR Service Company, came up with a conversion to one inch for the Ampex ATR. At the same time de Paravicini had developed a complete set of custom electronics for the ATR.

We thought this was the ideal combination so we bought one. Spitz built the transport, Greg Orton of Flux Magnetics did a superb job of buiding the heads, which were specifically designed for De Paravacini's electronics.

Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering in Maine also bought one of these machines. The sound is remarkable. We like it so much we are encouraging our clients to mix to the machine, so it is available for hire.

Many people agree that even in today's high resolution digital world there is no better sounding format than one inch analog. For this reason our machine also has an eight track one inch head and electronics for surround mastering.

The ATR-102s also feature custom electronics from ATR Service Co.
