Good planning can save you a lot of time and money in any kind of project. This is particularly true in the DVD production process. Here is some general information regarding this process. Please give us a call for more specific information.
Producing a DVD consists of the following steps:
- Planning the project
- Gathering the assets - video, audio, stills etc.
- Encoding the assets - making sure they conform to the spec
- Authoring - adding navigation and interactivity
- Multiplexing - making the project readable by the player
- Burning to DLT or authoring medium
- Testing
Planning the project - Think about what you want to do. If you don't have very much familiarity with what's out there, go out and buy some titles and see what other people are doing. This will give you ideas for your project. Plan the structure of your project and how you want it to work in terms of interactivity and navigation. We offer consultation services for this stage.
Gathering the assets - this means collecting all the materials you decided to use in the planning stage. It may involve shooting video or recording music - or just collecting stuff from other places. If your project includes menus you will need to create them in photoshop. We can help you develop all these kinds of content if you wish.
Encoding the assets - This is where it gets tricky. The DVD format has size (4.7GB) and bit rate (9.8Mbits per second) constraints. This step in the process consists of totaling the sizes of all the assets other than the video, and on that basis setting the compression parameters for the video so that the storage limit of the disc is not exceeded, and the total bit rate is allocated appropriately to both video and audio. See the section on encoding for more details.
Multiplexing - not much to do here, just hit go and go get some coffee!
Burning - not much to do here either - just wait!
Testing - very important last step before manufacturing. The disc should be tested on as many different types of players and computers as possible.
That's about all there is to it.
